Adrian Bonenberger Announces Suspension of Campaign for Governor of Connecticut
CONNECTICUT—Branford resident Adrian Bonenberger has announced the suspension of his campaign for governor of Connecticut.
Bonenberger’s campaign as an unaffiliated/independent candidate focused on decentralizing federal and state power by creating a voluntary state guard. This would have given Connecticut towns and cities autonomy by reducing their reliance on the state and federal governments for community defense and disaster response. He also sought to create a first-of-its-kind anti-corruption task force to evaluate corruption at the state, city, and town levels.
“Most citizens are fed up with a system that is expensive, unresponsive, overbearing, and widely seen as corrupt,” Bonenberger said. “Nearly half of registered Connecticut voters are independent or unaffiliated, which indicates a real crisis of confidence in the major parties’ ability to solve these systemic problems.”
The message of decentralization and anti-corruption was received with enthusiasm, Bonenberger said. His campaign personally gathered thousands of signatures in the heat of June and July, in partnership with Gwen Samuel, who campaigned alongside Bonenberger for the role of Lieutenant Governor. They were supported by a team of two dozen volunteers.
Running without the backing of either major political party or state CEP funding, the campaign was unable to secure enough signatures to obtain ballot access.
“Connecticut has wandered far from the founders’ vision of a decentralized democratic polity, but I look forward to continuing to work with neighbors and citizens I’ve met,” he said, “and I want to thank everyone who donated to, volunteered for, or participated in this campaign. I also want to thank my family for supporting this effort.”
